Housing Starts
Housing Starts, which was for May, were up only 4.3%, which was much less than the 22% expected. Starts are down 23% year over year. Single Family Starts were flat and saw no gain. Permits were up 14%, which was better than the 10% increase expected, but are still down 9% year over year. Single Family Permits were up 12%.
Many thought Starts would come back sooner, but builders were not purchasing land because they thought that demand would come back slower. Additionally, available labor and materials costs were an issue. With permits higher, we may see starts start to really rebound next month.
